Start Simple

Question: What should you buy first when considering automating your home?

Answer: Most people begin out with lighting system products (bulbs, switches, etc.). Once you become cushy with the technology you will probably ask yourself the question, “What else can I automate at home?”

Ensure That there is Compatibility Among The Products You Buy

Home automation is a constantly advancing field. New products become available all the time and replace older products. Don’t allow that to discourage you. Knowing a few simple basics about the types of devices you purchase will enable you to plan for their eventual obsolescence. Backward compatibility is the secret. When buying a new home automation product, check for backward compatibility with the products you are already using. When you go for products that are backward compatible, you can actually expand your system rather than replace it.

What are the Basic Home Automation Technologies?

1.  Powerline vs. RF

Powerline is a term that is tossed around many times in the home automation industry. It simply implies that the device communicates with other home automation products through your home electrical wiring system. RF means radio frequency and requires no wiring to function. Most systems are either Powerline or RF or the combination of the two. Hybrid devices are sometimes referred to as dual mesh devices or combine devices because they work in both environments.

2.  X10 Compatibility

Backward compatibility also refers to new devices being able to function with older X10 systems. X10 is one of the early and most popular home automation protocols (not to be perplexed with a company of the same name). Many older products use this same protocol.

3.  Wireless

Wireless or RF devices in home automation are relatively new. Presently, InsteonZ-Wave, and ZigBee are the three leading home automation wireless technologies. Each of these wireless technologies has its merit and demerit. Though Wireless products can be installed to work with Powerline systems using bridge devices. Many people today enjoy the ease when it comes to installation and the higher reliability provided by wireless technologies.

Seriously Consider Starter Kits

Most people begin their home automation setup with lighting system products such as switches, dimmers, and bulbs. Although you can purchase individual products and assemble your own system, it is easier and more economical to buy a starter kit first. Lighting starter kits are available in numerous configurations from several different manufacturers.

Starter kits typically include several light switches or plug-in modules and a remote control or interface panel. Some of the technologies that offer starter kits are Insteon, X-10, and Z-Wave. The price of starter kits can range from $50 to $350 depending on the technology and the number of components inside the pack. CHECK AMAZON FOR PRICE VARIARTIES CLICK HERE
